Control air toxics from difficult process sources
Article Abstract:
Sewer systems; equipment decommissioning and maintenance; and solids dewatering are sources of emissions of hazardous air pollutants that are difficult to control. The key to a cost-effective control strategy is the preparation of a good problem definition and a sound design basis. Sufficient time and effort should be spent on this task since it has the biggest impact on compliance, safety, operability and costs. The elimination or control of emissions involves optimizing the tradeoffs between source minimization and collection-control systems.

Properly purge and inert storage vessels
Article Abstract:
The tasks of purging and inerting process vessels are intended to keep the oxygen concentration below the limiting oxygen concentration (LOC). The LOC is the concentration of oxidant below which a deflagration cannot occur in a specified mixture. Syphon, vacuum, pressure and sweep-through are the most common batch purging methods while the continuous inerting methods are fixed- and variable-rate. There are several factors that must be taken into consideration when designing any system to reduce oxidant concentration to safe levels.

Manage product stewardship based on risk
Article Abstract:
The Guiding Principles of Responsible Care established by the Chemical Manufacturers Assn requires chemical process industries to develop and produce chemicals safely, educate customers on safe use and work with others to resolve problems. Practice 4 of the Code contains a knowledge base for each product while Practice 5 describes health, safety and environmental risks. Practice 6 prescribes the ways of managing these risks.
