Long-term capacity management: Linking the perspectives from manufacturing strategy and sales and operations planning
Article Abstract:
Efficient long-term capacity management is vital to any manufacturing firm. It has implications on competitive performance in terms of cost, delivery speed, dependability and flexibility. In a manufacturing strategy, capacity is a structural decision category, dealing with dynamic capacity expansion and reduction relative to the long-term changes in demand levels. Sales and operations planning (S&OP) is the long-term planning of production levels relative to sales within the framework of a manufacturing planning and control system. Within the S&OP, resource planning is used for determining the appropriate capacity levels in order to support the production plan. Manufacturing strategy and sales and operations planning provide two perspective on long-term capacity management. [C] 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. A coherent methodology for productivity analysis employing integrated partial efficiency
Article Abstract:
An integrated partial efficiency method is developed for productivity analysis in a manufacturing environment. The method is an alternative to the classical Debreau-Farrell technical efficiency approach. It is based on extended activity analysis and allows a natural mode of aggregation into higher-level units or clusters. The method is also easily understood and applicable to other performance assessments.

An MCDM framework for dynamic systems
Article Abstract:
The use of a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach to the modeling of dynamic control systems gives the advantages of flexibility in the design requirements and the ability to solve trade-off problems. Such problems arise in such instances as the need to balance the need for response speed and response smoothness, two factors which unfortunately do not always go together.
