Getting the best out of mother's milk
Article Abstract:
Cytel Corp., headquartered in San Diego, CA, has designed an enzymatic technology that produces Sialyl lactose, a milk carbohydrate. The company employed genetic engineering to combine two enzymes into a single protein that produces sialyl lactose in an aqueous solution, composed of lactose, sialic acid and cytidine monosphate. The new technology was developed to serve companies that see potential use Sialyl lactose for cosmetic, oral care and nutritional products, according to Cytel chief scientific officer Jim Paulson.

Sizing up pharmaceutical pilot plants
Article Abstract:
Pharmaceutical pilot plants, which are widely used in the processing of drug preparations for clinical trials, are undergoing changes in design in reaction to changes within the industry. The goal of reducing the time to market for a specific drug to five years has resulted in pilot plant designs that are capable of producing higher quantities of the product. In addition to improved capability, adaptability and flexibility, they also accommodate greater product segregation and containment.
