Japan's industrial R&D spending revives, as rising international competition puts premium on research
Article Abstract:
Japanese industrial research and development spending has increased by 4.6% over 1994 levels despite the country's poor economic condition. Several major companies have committed themselves to technology-led economic growth and the creation of high-value-added products through research. Most of the firms conduct their R&D efforts in their central laboratories, employing more than 600 scientists per 10,000 employees. Japan is forecast to continue being a major technological challenger in internationally competitive markets in the year 2000.

Despite financial woes, Japan's spending on science and technology increases and reforms continue
Article Abstract:
R&D spending in Japan is expected to rise despite the country's financial crisis. Both the Japanese government and major Japanese firms announced plans to boost spending on science and technology in 1998. The most significant R&D increases in the private sector are expected in the electronics, automobile and machinery industries. It also appears that more Japanese R&D will be conducted in the country as companies reduce their direct investments overseas.
