'Supercomputer U's'
Article Abstract:
Four universities: Princeton, Cornell, University of California (San Diego), and University of Illinois (Urbana-Champaign) are receiving supercomputers via a $200 million grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF). Networks will tie thirty additional schools in these four National Advanced Scientific Computing Centers. The three goals for the center are : 1) To facilitate resolution of hitherto unsolvable problems; 2) to train students and researchers on advanced computer equipment; and 3) to stimulate the development of more powerful supercomputers.

An Artificially Intelligent Locomotive Mechanic
Article Abstract:
General Electric has an artificial intelligence system to help troubleshoot diesel engine operating problems. Drawing on the experience of a forty-year veteran locomotive engineer, GE developed software. A shortage of human experts makes computer assistance necessary. The system is menu-driven; novice engineers can use it successfully. The program runs on a PDP 11-23 and was originally written in LISP, later redesigned in FORTH. A picture of David Smith, the veteran engineer and team leader, Dr. Francis S. Lynch is included.
