Cable slouches toward open access
Article Abstract:
Open access to cable systems by Internet service providers (ISP) will not be easy to achieve. For example, it is not clear how a cable company should proceedin the technical matter of dividing up a fixed amount of information-carrying capacity among many ISPs. Questions involving fairness versus efficiency arise, and it is not clear how to ensure that a cable provider does not favor a company. Industry observers say it could be several years before cable systems accommodating multiple ISPs become commonplace.
