Directed forces soften the ride: active vibration and distortion control has been made to work in a structure of great complexity
Article Abstract:
New technology allows a large machinery raft to be firmly mounted and able to resit the action of a pitching ship, but easible movable by hand pressure. It is intended for naval applications, but could be used in civilian maritime construction and manufacturing. Support comes from electromagnetic actuators incorporating Hall effect sensor chips, with power coming from five channel pulse width modulated amplifiers. The technology incorporates a central computer architecture.

Metal foam delivers superlight components: foamed metals are strong, rigid, fire and impact resistant and a fraction of the weight of their conventional counterparts
Article Abstract:
Foamed metals have twice the stiffness per unit weight of conventional metals. Structural polymer type foams are widely available, but those based on metals have higher strength and temperature resistance. Alulight metal foams were developed at the Institute of Materials and Machine Mechanics, and applications could include heat exhcangers, heat sinks and reducing turbulence over aircraft wings.

Double cylinder delivers a smoother ride
Article Abstract:
Engineer Dennis McNeely of Michigan, US, has prototyped and patented a vehicle suspension system based on hydraulics. The Fluid Spring is designed to cope with extreme load variations and is for use by construction and off-road vehicles. The new system will be mounted on a test vehicle in second quarter 2000.
