Diversity and performance in R&D
Article Abstract:
Research and development (R&D) laboratories are mainly managed by US-born white men, but increasingly new hires are women or foreign-born scientists. The staff members often encounter environments with work styles and communication styles that are different from their own styles. A survey of engineers and scientists in R&D jobs in large industrial firms in the US hopes to address whether a gap exists between staff and native-born white men. The intent is to determine the implications of a gap if it exists. Firms that need innovations to survive must understand that the issue of diversity in the workplace is important because innovation depends on the ability of workers to build on each others' ideas and contributions.

Diversity in the technical work force: rethinking the management of scientists and engineers
Article Abstract:
Changes in the demographic composition of the labor force mean that more women and foreign born employees will be involved in science and engineering, and this brings challenges in understanding the different needs and social contexts of these two groups. Women, for example, seem to have less involvement in their work groups than do men, while foreign born employees do not appear to have such wide social networks as do employees born in the United States. Such differences could be minimized by training. However, further research is needed to refine these findings, for example there are likely to be differences between foreign born employees themselves.

Gender and race/ethnic composition of technical work groups: relationship to creative productivity and morale
Article Abstract:
Male dominated work groups appear to bring out creativity among male professionals according to a study that aimed to determine the relationship of the gender and race ethnic composition with measures of creative productivity and morale. In the same way, predominantly female work groups appear to give more satisfaction to female professionals.
