Doing R&D in the former Soviet Union
Article Abstract:
A six-point guide for US firms in undertaking successful research and development ventures in the former Soviet Union is provided. Among the guidelines offered are finding out which scientific and technological capabilities in the republics relate to a firm's activities, identifying what potential research can be undertaken on a low budget and with a high payoff for the company and preparing to utilize a significant portion of the investment on equipment andsupplies for the research team.

Seven factors that make it imperative for an engineer to complement his technical knowhow with social skills are cited. These include the expansion of engineering in every direction, the changing demography of the profession with more women, minorities and foreigners entering the field, the new social alternatives that demand diffeent types of people than those that an engineer usually deals with, the opening of global markets and the rise to managerial positions of engineers.

Y2K - lessons for the future
Article Abstract:
The failure of companies to render their computer systems Year- 2000-compliant reflects the incapacity of executives to perform their duties. In most cases, business failures are triggered by the inability of upper management personnel to understand the nature of the entire computer system. Professional incompetence is likewise exhibited by Management Information System (MIS) directors who were not able to consider the legal and commercial aspects of managing computer systems.
