Ease relief system design and documentation
Article Abstract:
The basis for, and development of, system relief designs is a challenging exercise and becomes more complex with regard to multiple-process batch reactors. Personnel/equipment safety and OSHA regulations require the complete evaluation and documentation of the relief system design basis (RSDB). The identification of an adequate RSDB and its documentation has been left to industry. An approach is suggested that was applied by a large bulk drug making company in developing an adequate RSDB for a multiple-process reactor. This approach is applicable throughout the chemical process industries.

Solve instrument seal problems
Article Abstract:
There are a broad variety of existing pressure and level devices to detect and measure pressure, Many of these instruments require seals and associated capillary lines for fluids that congeal at ambient temperatures, which prevent transmission of pressure to the device or are hot and corrosive. These seals are frequently expensive and difficult to repair. A number of alternative approaches pertaining to sealing instruments and some general guidelines on proper instrument installation may help chemical engineers overcome these instrument seal problems.

Membranes remove N2 from fuel cell feed
Article Abstract:
Enerfex Inc of Williston, VT, has installed the first Nitrogen Reduction Membrane Unit (NRMU) to pretreat natural gas supplying a fuel cell power- generation system in Omaha, NE. Each of the NRMU's 18 membrane modules contains about 15 miles of 250-micron hollow fiber coated with a 0.5- micron plasma-deposited semipermeable gas-separation barrier. The use of NRMU is expected to significantly reduce premature fuel-cell stack replacement costs by protecting fuel cells from the harmful effects of nitrogen in the natural gas.
