Expanding models push software to the limit
Article Abstract:
Load times for large CAD models can take several hours but recent developments have produced software that enables users to load up only what is needed. The Pro/Fly-Through module is being used as a way of selecting parts of a model that require work, without loading the entire model. Silicon Graphics has launched to Octane range using a crossbar switch rather than a shared bus in response to the need for more computing power to handle large models. SolidWorks has released its new version 3D SolidWorks 97 software, incorporating a new split line feature.

Computer offers best mechanisms
Article Abstract:
Professor Tony Medland and Dr Glen Mullinex of Brunel University Centre for Geometric and Modelling Design, United Kingdom have developed rule-based computer aided design for mechanism design and process planning. The system produces a range of design options according to a set of rules based on design goals. The software greatly speeds up the design process, optimum results being achieved in minutes rather than days. Changes can be acommodated by incorporating new rules.
