Government backs MP's transport bill
Article Abstract:
Liberal Democrat MP for Bath Don Foster, is seeking a second reading of his Road Traffic Reduction Bill, and there are already indications from the DoT that the government will not oppose it. The legislation previously required the setting of national targets to achieve traffic reduction, but this was dropped. Local councils would now be called on to prepare their own plans for traffic reduction, possibly including cycle lanes, improved public transport and park-and-ride schemes. The bill has largely been welcomed in principle.

Labour's threat to planning over PFI
Article Abstract:
A future Labour government in the UK would be prepared to assume more of the risks of Private Finance Initiative (PFI) projects. Indeed, it would be willing to side-step planning controls and approval procedures if the future of vital PFI infrastructure schemes was at stake. In doing so, it would be responding to current concerns among businesses that PFI in its present form is not proving very effective in assisting the private sector with assessing the risks associated with investment schemes.

Roads programme gets last minute boost in the Budget
Article Abstract:
The UK government's recent 1996 Budget did not contain the expected abolition of the country's trunk road programme. Transport secretary Sir George Young was successful in arguing that the planned investment of 1.5 billion pounds sterling a year should remain in place. The programme will cost a total of 6 billion pounds sterling. However, the longer-term 15-20 year road programme has now been dropped.
