Hazardous areas; up at the sharp end
Article Abstract:
Electrical work in areas where explosions may occur is covered by a number of regulations. Hazardous areas are classified into three types, based on the presence of inflammable gasses but the presence of dust and the processes used in factories like chemical plants may also influence the definition of a hazardous area. Specific guidance for work in such areas and for the types of equipment to use is given in BS 5501 and BS 5345 as well as documents G41 and GS5 from the Health and Safety Executive. Training is essential for electricians working in hazardous conditions and contractors should study the complex regulations with care.

New approach to speed up legalising of standards
Article Abstract:
Electrical equipment for use in areas where there is a risk of explosions is covered by national and international standards. However, new equipment may be withheld from use by delays in updating the European Community directives that regulate how standards should be followed. Consequently, New Approach Directives are being devised with the intention of simplifying procedures and reducing delays. Three routes to compliance with Essential Safety Requirements will be specified and comformity categories will related to different levels of risk.
