Hiring People Who Do Good Research
Article Abstract:
M. Franklin Squires, the manager of personnel and administration of Xerox Palo Alto Research Centers, believes that interviews of technical applicants ought to be conducted by the best scientists working in the applicant's specialty. Xerox has a six-step interviewing procedure. The technical applicant first meets with someone from personnel and with a senior technical line manager. Then he gives a technical presentation of some part of his research to the audience of six to eight researchers. The same group of researchers meets individually with the applicant. Finally, all those who did the interviewing meet to decide whether or not to make an offer.

Foreign companies establishing more labs in the United States for basic and applied research
Article Abstract:
A recent study showed that the number of foreign companies establishing R and D facilities in the US has increased. Figures indicate that the $6.5 billion in spending posted in 1987 has more than doubled to $14.6 billion in 1993. Foreign company-funded R and D projects also increased from 10.6% to 15.3% during the same period. Two factors were identified as the major motivation of these companies to establish facilities in the US. First, they would gain a competitive edge in the market and, second, they would be able to develop and acquire complementary technologies that they require.
