Hydrocarbon analysis in realtime
Article Abstract:
Systektum has developed a new monitor called Kontavisor that can measure the hydrocarbon content of a liquid or solid at a rate of once every second. The Kontavisor operates on the principle of time-resolved laser- induced fluorescence and on the fluorescence of hydrocarbons at a specific wavelength. It uses an ultraviolet, pulsed microchip laser that is excited at 3 kHz to measure the fluorescence of the hydrocarbons. The device is sensitive enough to detect 1 mg hydrocarbon per liter of fluid and 10 mg per kg of solid.

Impregnated metal keeps valves leak-free
Article Abstract:
Neles Automation is using a new technology which allows butterfly valves to maintain their sealing abilities longer under tough conditions. The technology deposits polytetrafluoroethylene on defects in the microscopic surface of the valve's seat. This reduces friction on the sliding surfaces, lowers operating torque by as much as 50% and provides for a better seal. The technology used on Neles' ZeroLeak Neldisc butterfly valves have 'bubble-tight' shutoff at temperatures ranging from cryogenic to 320 degrees C.

These catalysts make just one isomer
Article Abstract:
ChiroTech Technology Ltd has developed a new class of rhodium-based ligands and catalysts that asymmetrically hydrogenate itaconates, resulting in chemical intermediates such as 2-alkyl succinates, which are key components in several experimental drugs. The novel FerroTANE ligands and catalysts have a conversion rate greater than 95% and a purity of 99% enantioexcess. These are based on a chiral 1,1'-bis(phosphetano) ferrocene liquid structure and are active at 60 to 80 psi at temperatures below 40 degrees C.
