Keeping the Net up
Article Abstract:
The Internet comprises many independently owned and managed networks, and consequently, keeping the Net up and running involves two separate tasks: keeping the networks working is one thing; and keeping them working together is another. The former task is increasingly the business of a new kind of company called a management service provider (MSP). Such a company functions like an application service provider (ASP), but the focus is on network management and monitoring operations. Keeping all the different networks in sync is the job of the Internet Corporation for Assigned and Numbers (ICANN).

Computers
Article Abstract:
Computers in 1999 seem to have good prospects, as does information-technology-related business in general. Faster chips with lower cost will be out, there will be open operating systems, and computing will be even more pervasive. New storage technologies and superfast supercomputing applications will be on the scene. In the near term, ten-teraflops computing is the goal. Intel will still have more computer makers using its microprocessors than anyone else's and it will ship faster ones. IBM supplies microprocessors to a wide range of makers of computer and communications equipment, although many of the devices, among them mobile phones, do not look like computers. Linux is an easier operating system than Unix; it has a growing following and companies planning to offer products and services related to it. Digital Versatile Disks (DVDs), as they are called now, wearable computers, computers hidden in consumer products, and iMacs are discussed.
