The Internet
Article Abstract:
The Internet of the new millennium will be a faster, wider reaching medium of information access and connectivity. This is due to the implementation of technologies like DSL and cable Internet access, new markup language specifications like XHTML and SMIL, and worldwide access to domain name registration and encryption technology. DSL and cable Internet access allow users to send and receive way more information than was feasible using traditional modem technology. XHTML and SMIL will work together to give web designers more control over the presentation of their web pages and making them compatible with XML, which is gaining wide acceptance in the business sector. The dissolution of Network Solutions' monopoly on domain name registration will encourage competition and allow businesses greater access to 'dot-com' names.

Computing
Article Abstract:
The era of the personal computer may be drawing to a close thanks to the Internet. The advent of wireless technologies such as the Bluetooth standard have brought about the development of application-specific 'Internet information appliances.' These small consumer electronic devices are portable and can be used for anything from web browsing and email to online price comparisons using UPC scans. They allow users full mobility - a demand unrealistic for the traditional PC. Cellular and infrared technology allow internet appliances to communicate and exchange data over wireless LANs. Companies like Microsoft have refocused their efforts on products that support these devices and the ever-present server computers that form the corpus of the Internet. Software technology and information storage technology will become vitally important as consumers discover the convenience of distributed computing.
