Learning from mistakes: hospital team discovers valuable lessons after TQM effort disbands
Article Abstract:
Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY, began a program to encourage the use of total quality management (TQM) tools and practices in improving the hospital's operations. The hospital formed a multidisciplinary team to determine the challenges that could hamper the adoption of TQM. However, the team eventually disbanded after failing to develop a consensus on numerous issues in the decision-making process. A discussion of some of these issues as well as some of the lessons learned through the initial TQM process is presented.

Hospital processes can't be improved until they are understood
Article Abstract:
Implementation of total quality management (TQM) in hospitals will help to improve health care services and cut costs. However, a full understanding of hospital processes is critical before any quality improvement program is initiated. Using a hospital processes description document, a simplified flowchart of the administrative and service processes could be generated to aid any quality management proposal.
