Lifting the listing veil: heritage secretary Stephen Dorrell is lifting the cloak of secrecy on how buildings are listed
Article Abstract:
Stephen Dorrell, heritage secretary, is considering whether 40 modern buildings such as Centre Point and Millbank Tower in London should be granted listed status. The public will be allowed to comment on listing proposals under new procedures, which would also enable heritage charities, local councils and owners to suggest a building for listing. Many have welcomed the changes although there are concerns that unscrupulous owners could protect the market value of their assets by demolishing or making alterations.
