SP Phosphates Ltd. of Rock Springs, WY, has installed an enterprise management and control system called Symphony from Elsag Bailey Process Automation of Wickliffe, OH. All the control systems at the company's phosphate plant have been upgraded with Symphony, and each connects to process-control work stations in the plant-administration building. The $1.5-million upgrade has resulted in cost savings of $1 million per year.

Microsoft Corp's 32-bit operating system called Windows CE offers new power and flexibility to such hand-held devices as personal palm-size PCs. Like Windows NT, the Redmond, WA-based company based Windows CE on a subset of the Win32 application programming interface. But compared to Windows NT and other operating systems, Windows CE runs on a microchip to eliminate the need for sensitive disk drives.
