Manufacturing success hinges on document quality
Article Abstract:
UT Automotive, a tier-one supplier, avoided being dictatorial when undertaking QS-9000 implementation, permitting about 16 functional areas to develop its own documentation. The company also avoided duplication efforts and to promote this, UT Automotive had to determine specifically which QS-9000 elements can be applied companywide and which are specific to a function. Eventually, the company realized that it is more effective to develop a cross-functional group to come up with the Level 1 and Level 2 documents.

In-process inspection cuts warranty work 93%
Article Abstract:
Teamwork and employee training enabled Chrysler Corp.'s machining and forging facility at New Castle, IN, to reduce its warranty work by 93% from 1990 levels of 1.8 repairs per 100 vehicles. The achievement was driven by the company's 1987 Modern Operating Agreement which paved the way for a more cooperative relationship between the company's management and union. The initiative forced the plant to form 108 product teams and identify quality problems within their control.
