Measuring length by hand
Article Abstract:
Calipers and micrometers are indispensable tools for precise measurements of outside and inside diameters, depth and step. Calipers have two jaws with one fixed and the other movable along a scale. The two jaws can be opened and closed to fit the size of the object being measured. The three types of calipers are Vernier, mechanical dial and electronic digital. Micrometers provide the double contact of a caliper with a precision screw adjustment that advances 0.025 of an inch in each complete turn.

Video measuring systems speed off-line inspection
Article Abstract:
Video measuring systems help manufacturers hasten off-line inspection by providing explosive images of parts being measured. They can make off-line dimensional measurements of parts without touching them. The three types of video measuring systems include manual, semiautomatic and automated. However, before investing in one, manufacturers should first determine their business needs as well as the speed and price of the system.

Make the right choice: calipers measure up
Article Abstract:
The correct method is required for using a caliper. Measurement errors and inferior repeatability regularly occur due to inadequate measuring techniques, and not due to gage inaccuracy. Preferred caliper devices include the spring and scissor types. Electronic calipers can provide greater resolution, normally 0.0005 in, but are not necessarily more realible.
