Many ways to drive down power
Article Abstract:
The UK's Energy Efficiency Office has undertaken a number of studies into ways of reducing electric power costs for motors. It has been shown that the key to reducing power costs is better choice of motors and electronic controls. An electronic controller which reduces the voltage supplied to the terminals can prove effective if the motor is to be run at constant speed, but not under full load, while higher efficiency motors are effective too.

Length measured with light precision
Article Abstract:
The development of an instrument for accurately measuring length using a laser interferometer is discussed. The device, researched by Professor Michael Downs, can measure to sub nanometre accuracy and has applications in machine tooling and metrology.
