Micros at Bridge
Article Abstract:
Twenty-one microprocessors were used to control the light show staged for the centennial celebration of the Brooklyn Bridge in New York. An Intel 8085 central microprocessor controlled remote 8085's that controlled about 400 switches and dimmers, projectors, a sound system, and motor-driven mirrors. This system was cost saving, simpler than a manual system, and will control the bridge's lighting for another twenty to thirty years.

Tuning in with Micros
Article Abstract:
Microprocessor-based radio tuners now make tuning a radio as simple as pushing a button. The systems use a phase-locked-loop to lock onto a frequency specified by the microprocessor and generated by an accurate crystal oscillator. One National Semiconductor system designed for car stereo uses a COPs 4-bit microcontroller to perform the calculations needed to determine the frequency at which to set the tuner.

Keeping Cool with Micros
Article Abstract:
For large industrial or institutional cooling systems separate areas are controlled individually by a microprocessor. This chiller-optimization package uses a 6800 microprocessor for each valve in the system and each one is programmed separately. The package saves energy and is more tolerant of faults than a system using a central computer.
