Millennial musings
Article Abstract:
Millennial musings are presented by a senior scientist in the Irish chemical industry contemplating the history of chemistry. The year 1901 stands out, being the first in which Nobel prizes were awarded and the one immediately after Max Planck's announcement of the quantum theory and notable for some other reasons. The important, event in the year, however was when oil was struck at Spindletop in Texas. Synthetic polymers and all the industries depending on them depended on that.

The two-edged sword
Article Abstract:
The date of the origin of the chemical industry and related environmental damage are discussed by a senior scientist in the Irish chemical industry. If the industry includes metallurgy, it is at the time of the introduction of the blast furnace in Europe, about 1500. Otherwise the beginning of the use of the Leblanc process, with its pollution, marks the start. Chemists can change the world for the better. They must also try to mitigate negative effects of processes.

Birthday gifts for your favorite chemist
Article Abstract:
Chemists may have different tastes in birthday gifts from those of others and in this amusing article the suggestion is made that a different substance would be given for every year, but based on atomic numbers. The compounds of the respective elements would be allowed. Elemental fluorine would be not a good idea for a nine-year-old. Water is all right for a one-year-old and graphite pencils for a six-year-old.
