Modified precontrol
Article Abstract:
Precontrol has been in existence since the 1950s but has sparked little interest as a process control method because it does not allow process centering. When Texas Instruments Inc adopted precontrol, it limited the tool to variable with Cpks of 2.0 or higher to ensure a 7.3 x 10(super -6) alpha risk and a 6.6 x 10(super -8) beta risk and eliminate alarm conditions on unchanged processes that seem to have changed due to low Cpks. Modified precontrol allows centering and preserves statistical process control benefits. Aside from a Cpk of at least 2.0, the green zone's center should equal the average of all data and the yellow/red boundaries should be plus or minus 5-sigma from the average.

Balridge award doubles AT&T's 'delight,' sets two other records for firsts
Article Abstract:
American Telephone and Telegraph Co (AT&T) and four other companies were chosen as the winners of the 1992 Balridge National Quality award for excellence in quality management, besting 85 other entries. AT&T Network Systems Group/Transmission Systems Unit won in the manufacturing category, while AT&T Universal Card Services won in the service category. The 1992 rites marked the first time two Balridge awards were won by a single company. In addition, it was also the first time that the Department of Commerce handed five awards and that two service companies were declared as winners.

Intel's circuitous route to implementing total quality
Article Abstract:
Intel Corp's computer service division performed well during the late 1970s because of minimal competition. The advent of the personal computer business, however, hampered the usual profitability of the service division. A series of business management schemes were implemented in the latter part of the 1980s but they also failed to revive the service segment. Intel's operations received a boost when the company applied for the Malcolm Baldridge National Quality Award. Despite some difficulties, the firm was finally able to implement total quality management.
