More work from more play
Article Abstract:
There has been renewed interest in the development of leisure and entertainment schemes encouraged by the public's wish to make the most of its free time. With the National Lottery set to fund several sports and entertainment projects, some requiring complex electrical installations, the future for mechanical and electrical contractors looks promising. There are potential opportunities for contractors in sports arenas, sports grounds, indoor sports facilities, cinemas, theatres, museums and exhibitions.

Hot and bothered
Article Abstract:
The UK's Benchmark scheme, supported by several boiler makers and installers, is designed to reduce boiler faults caused by poor installation and commissioning. The scheme offers training for installers and an official log book which is given to the customer and contains control and commissioning details. An estimated 5 million pounds sterling a year is spent by domestic boiler makers on fixing faulty boilers, with around 40% of domestic call outs attributed to rogue installers.

Oil be there
Article Abstract:
Up to 1,800 transformers and 450,000 capacitors in the UK contain polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBS) and should be taken out of service by the end of 1999. Large transformers escape the new rules but must be registered with the Environment Agency. Actions to be taken by contractors are suggested and advice on how to check for dielectric oils is presented.
