Going Dutch
Article Abstract:
The energy demonstration village of Ecolonia is tangible evidence of the Netherlands' commitment to sustainable development. The village of 101 environmentally friendly houses is part of a larger development of 6,000 dwellings and was designed by Belgian architect Lucien Kroll. The infrastructure emphasis is on movement by bicycle or on foot and the houses are built around a reed-fringed lake bisected by canals to underline the ecological aspects of the development. The village is designed to evaluate the environmental effectiveness of life-cycle management, energy conservation and quality imprvement.

For a slicker city
Article Abstract:
UK urban developments are required to incorporate the sustainable design standards identified at the 1992 Rio Summit. Building professionals are beginning to recognise the need to consider building design work in terms of overall impact on energy, ecology and environment. Geographical location and sourcing costs should be considered when selecting suitable building materials for development. Regulatory controls should encourage the reduction, recycling and recovery of building materials wherever possible.

Mitterand's masterpieces

The park at La Villette, Paris, and La Defense are two of President Mitterand's 'grand projets' which contribute to urban design. The design of both projects prioritised urban design along with building design. The La Defense project was launched in 1958 in order to regenerate a Parisian district, including commercial and industrial development. Background to the design of La Defense and La Villette is included.
