Motion 'computers' think ahead
Article Abstract:
New motion controllers with powerful, PC-type computing power have been developed. These are highly programmable, having an open architecture with a full, real time operating system based on Linux which enables responses to interrupts in typically less than a micro-second and while running machine tools at maximum speed, it will be possible to look ahead to control accelerations on corners to eliminate 'jerks'.

Polymer fibers make flexible concrete to withstand earthquakes
Article Abstract:
Some studies were conducted that aimed primarily at improving earthquake resistance in large buildings and civil engineering structures, enhancing durability in infrastructures and for effecting repairs were using engineered cementitious composites (ECCs). The ECC is a low cost material with many other uses within engineering, and is already being used in new large buildings.
