NIST sees need to improve own accuracy in dimensional metrology as US manufacturers tighten tolerances
Article Abstract:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has released a report on the increasing challenges to dimensional metrology in manufacturing. Dimensional tolerances in manufacturing have decreased by a factor of five since the mid-1980s and machining systems for automotive components in the 1990s can hold a bore dimension of 1.5 micromilimeters. While the trend is evidents in normal, precision and ultraprecision machining, NIST standards still do not meet needs in several areas including semiconductor manufacture.

Digital probe could change electronic gaging
Article Abstract:
The development of a digital gaging probe could revolutionalize the gaging process. The innovative probe, developed by Schlumberger Industries Inc, is expected to phaseout the use of the linear variable differential transformer (LVDT). The analog system of the LVDT cannot maximize overall system accuracy unlike the digital probe which can process and indicate measurements without degradation. The digital probe also does not require the use of a setting master.

Computers in metrology
Article Abstract:
Metrologists believe that computers will be increasingly applied into measurements and will be accompanied by a proliferation of process control equipment and computer-related equipment. Modern metrology tools have been revolutionized by computer technology, while standards and processes have also improved. Computer applications in metrology are being developed for data analysis, testing, inspection and robotics.
