Machines do more by getting smarter
Article Abstract:
Th latest generation of intelligent production systems are cell-oriented and aimed at reducing costs through increased output and reduced wastage. Among producers in the field is Numerik Jena with its Doubleflex system, a tape-based encoder system which uses an opto-electronic chip as the reading element. The company has also developed a shaft encoder with an aluminium code disk rather than glass.

Natural frequency of vibration gives precise tension in wires
Article Abstract:
A device is developed that precisely measures tension in rods and wires from their natural frequency of vibration, which could help determine tension in lift cables, racing yacht rigging and other industrial applications. The 'Digiforce' took two years of development, and is based on a novel, patented hardware technique and mathematical analytical process.
