Need a little hydrogen? Here's how to make your own!
Article Abstract:
Epyx Corp. has developed a multi-fuel processor, which will be initially used by an industrial plant for the production of merchant hydrogen for commercial purposes. The Cambridge, MA-based firm, which recently became independent from Arthur D. Little, Inc., developed the process with the key aim of tying it up with fuel cells. Partial oxidation was used by Epyx Corp. so fuels such as gasoline, ethanol, methanol, natural gas, propane or butane could result from hydrogen. A proprietary catalyst is utilized to induce the reaction when around 20% of the fuel is burned.

A new meaning for the term 'ultra-high-purity hydrogen.'
Article Abstract:
Johnson Matthey Catalytic Systems Division (JM) of Wayne, PA, has been able to produce hydrogen with trace impurities of less than 1 ppb through use of high-purity H2 feed streams. The new process, which was co-developed with Air Products and Chemicals Inc. of Allentown, PA, is an innovation from JM's existing palladium-diffusion membrane system used in manufacturing semiconductor devices. The new method, which was tested in two of Air Products' hydrogen purifiers with flowrates of over 500 std. L/ min, is in the process of jointly patented by the two companies.
