New York wants more hybrid buses on the city's streets
Article Abstract:
New York City's Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) is now operating five hybrid diesel/electric buses and plans to add 125 more by 2001; its five-year capital plan calls for a budget including 250 of the vehicles. The Transit Authority seeks both cost savings and lower emissions; the hybrids use 50 percent less fuel than a conventional bus and use reliable direct-drive and regenerative-braking systems that cut maintenance costs. Each 12.2-meter long bus is driven entirely by its electric motor, with a battery proiding extra power as needed and the diesel engine operating a generator to keep the batteries charged. Testing has also begun on an all-electric bus whose development was funded by a cooperative public and private effort in the US and Israel.

Instrumentaton: the quiet revolution
Article Abstract:
Test and measurement equipment manufacturers Hewlett-Packard Co and Tektronix Inc isolated their instrument businesses by using two very different strategies. HP opted to create Agilent Technologies, a company at first wholly owned by the parent and subsequently sold in part to the public. After receiving earnings reports for its first two quarters, HP plans to divide the remaining shares among HP stock holders. Tektronix opted to sell off all but its instrument interests and retain the original company name. Xerox purchases all of Tektronix' color printing interests for $925 million. Both strategies were effective in creating new revenue through the stock market.
