Planners given food for thought
Article Abstract:
The UK government should use planning policy guidance as a way of encouraging the development of urban networks of green spaces where local people may grow food, according to a report from the National Food Alliance. Growing food in urban areas has a number of benefits, including boosting the biodiversity of the environment and regenerating housing developments. The report also indicates that the planning system should give more attention to the importance of maintaining and promoting allotments and parks.

Food for thought
Article Abstract:
The UK government's Department of the Environment (Doe) has pledged to revise planning laws following proposals aimed at reviving Britain's ailing town centres. The environment select committee suggested that the conflict between transport and retail laws be removed and that leglislation covering out-of-town development be reviewed. Retailers say they welcome the DoE's proposals but they are unlikely to provide enough incentive for developers to invest in town centres.
