Planners rush to develop Euro-regions against RICS
Article Abstract:
A dispute has arisen over a proposal for European planning regions, which the UK RICS argues is flawed since the proposed regions lack coherence in economic, social and political terms. The proposed regions face similar problems, but this is not enough of a unifying force, argues Donald Sabey from the RICS. Other UK planners argue that joint plans covering European regions bring benefits. There is a consensus that the UK needs a greater input in regional planning to attract funds from European bodies.

Ceredigion planners who speak no Welsh get no jobs
Article Abstract:
Ceredigion district council in Dyfed, Wales, has appointed Emrys Lewis to the new expanded position of director of environmental services. Director of planning John Bowen, and his deputy, Andrew Pykett, have protested about the appointment, claiming that they were unable to apply for the position, for which they had more experience than Emrys Lewis, because they cannot speak Welsh fluently. The council has defended the move, pointing out that 70% of the population in the area speak Welsh.

Organic growth in the garden: the sub-division of farmland into smallholdings is causing headaches for planners in Kent as they wrestle with the definition of an 'agricultural business'
Article Abstract:
Many larger apple farms in Kent have been sub-divided following the collapse of the apple market, but local authorities do not want orchards to become like allotments. There are concerns that the erection of barns and other buildings will lead to a proliferation of similar buildings in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. However the Soil Association believes that planners are unhelpful to organic growers, and that many smallholders are willing to accept lower incomes.
