Plant control systems get an Ethernet connection
Article Abstract:
A manufacturing software that permits information from plant-floor devices to be conveyed via Ethernet connection has been developed. The software, a joint project of the Open DeviceNet Vendor Assn, the Industrial Ethernet Assn and Boca Raton, FL-based ControlNet International, is being offered for free as a global standard to the Geneva, Switzerland-based International Standards Organization. The platform will be introduced at Chicago, IL, on Mar 13-26, 2000, during National Manufacturing Week 2000.

A radiation litmus test
Article Abstract:
The Los Alamos National Laboratory in Los Alamos, NM, has developed a plastic radiation dosimeter capable of detecting radiation ranging from 15 millirems to 2 rems. The dosimeter, which is called the Radiation Litmus Paper (RLP), is the size of a business card and contains a proprietary chemical solution and a catalyst that reacts once the card is flexed. RLP's main advantage over other techniques of radiation detection is that it can be produced for under $1 each.

Deadly bacterial duo
Article Abstract:
AgraQuest Inc of Davis, CA, has increased the effectiveness of bioinsecticide Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) against caterpillars with the addition of a chemical enhancer derived from another type of bacillus. The enhancer, which the company discovered through its screening process, is capable of increasing the potency of Bt by as much as tenfold. The enhanced bioinsecticide has also been applied to such crops as transgenic soybean and cotton with good results.
