Plastics can provide their own feedback
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Daimler-Chrysler have developed Bragg grating sensors that are built into embedded optical fibres, thus enabling the measurement of the physical phenomena in composite structures, including deformation, stress and strain, and elongation. This research will likely extend a component's service life, while reducing the costs of maintenance.

Plastics get tough
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Ohio State University have developed a method of making much tougher, more heat-resistant plastics. The combination of toughness and heat resistance created by mixing the plastics with silica, will enable the plastics to be used in making engine parts.
