Power and energy
Article Abstract:
Renewable energy sources are of much interest and in that area photovoltaics (PVs), solar cells to create electricity, are close to becoming more than a niche supplier, on the way to being big business. British Petroleum, which has become interested in global warming, thereby breaking ranks with other large companies, is putting heavy investment into manufacturing capacity and research and development (R&D) for photovoltaics. A Dutch housing development called Nieuwland is a 1-MW photovoltaics project with about 5000 houses, an apartment building, sports complex, schools and other buildings. It, with other indicators, shows that photovoltaic electricity is coming of age. Production of PV modules has been going up at double-digit rates since 1990 and surpassed 100 MW in 1997. For nuclear power there are successes mixed with failures. Free-market electricity is having some difficulty getting started. Diagram shows wiring for house in Nieuwland allowing electricity to be returned to grid. Gas turbines are selling very well as utilities buy very efficient production equipment. Thin film materials are discussed and companies discussed include Enron of Solarex, Spire, Regional Energy Distribution Co. (Utrecht), Siemens Solar GmbH,Canon, Energy Conversion Devices, Kyocera, Sanyo Electric, Sharp, Matsushita, PECO Energy, Unicom, and General Electric
