Pyrophoric materials: handle carefully
Article Abstract:
Handling of hazardous materials, specifically of pyrophoric liquids that burns when they come into contact with air, is one of the greatest challenges of chemical engineering. Since the potential catastrophe resulting from the mishandling of these substances is high, it is important to minimize, if not entirely avoid, the occurrence of leaks. Some important items to to remember include the use of fire-safe quarter- turn ball valves, graphite gaskets, fire-rated actuators, thermal actuated devices, thermoplastic air tubings and solenoids.

The basics of Adsorber design
Article Abstract:
Adsorption is the most common process by which chemical process industries separate gases from liquids. Principles of adsorption equilibrium, temperature changes, properties and the cost of adsorbents, mass transfer kinetics and bed dynamics should be considered in designing adsorption units. Adsorption units are classified into three models, local equilibrium, empirical and analytic models. There are two types of adsorption units based on systems design, temperature-swing adsorption and;pressure-swing gas-adsorption.

Acid neutralizers' new "hands off" approach
Article Abstract:
The use of acid neutralizers for spills and for preventing corrosion raises safety issues and other handling problems. Acid spills involving transportation cost damages amounting to $11.9 million in 1998, compared to only $3.8 million in 1993. Government and chemical process industry officials recognize the remediation impact of these chemicals and have worked to develop acid control standards.
