Reducing inventories in a multi-echelon manufacturing firm: a case study
Article Abstract:
Multi-echelon manufacturing companies have a complex system of supply chains that makes decision-making on such matters as inventory difficult. However, with the application of scientific inventory systems, inventory control becomes easy and savings are realized. The trouble, however, with theoretical models lies in their overconcentration on data that make them impractical for application. Business practices, on the other hand, have so far failed to realize theoretical potentials.

The volume and structure of inventories
Article Abstract:
Research into the economics of inventories shows that there is not enough information about the actual inventory size and type on an international basis. This handicap needs to be overcome to be able to explain such trends as the decrease in the input/output inventory ratio and the changing inventory turnover in different industries. The tendency among countries to invest more in WIP inventories also needs to be further studied to uncover its basis.

Has inventory management in the US become more efficient and flexible? A macroeconomic perspective
Article Abstract:
Analysis of statistical data on manufacturing industries in the US shows that inventory management has changed, but only in certain manufacturing sectors. The change has come in the form of greater flexibility in terms of inventory adjustment in the face of extreme swings in sales trends and short-run fluctuations. Behavior pertinent to buffer stock management, however, appears unaffected.
