U.K. company Crown House Engineering (CHE) started a project in late 2000 to test the claims that off-site prefabrication results in construction benefits and savings. CHE is conducting a comparative trial at London's Savoy House, the previous site of Shell-Mex House, where the intended replacement of four identical floors made the project seemingly ideal for prefabrication.

The use of prefabricated plug-and-play electrical components and systems is becoming commonplace, with many companies finding this methodology to be effective and cost-efficient. The problems will arise, however, when the industry attempts to standardise all the different components made by all the different manufacturers.
