Selection of routes in a flexible manufacturing facility
Article Abstract:
A manufacturing facility can be considered flexible if it can adapt to changes rapidly and economically, both in its internal and external environment. Routeing flexibility, or the capacity of a facility to manufacture each product through anyone of several routes, is necessary in today's constantly changing market as it allows the facility to address changing production situations. Process planners are tasked with identifying the routes most feasible to production. Route selection problem involves identifying the set of routes which should be implemented so as to optimize costs related to routeing flexibility.

Integrated manufacturing planning for an AGV-based FMS
Article Abstract:
An integrated production planning methodology for an automated guided vehicle (AGV)-based flexible manufacturing system (FMS) is proposed. The approach simultaneously considers material processing and transportation functions and is decomposed into two smaller sub-problems, namely, flexible guidepath design and machine selection and operations sequencing. Simulation results show that it is possible to increase the operational flexibility of an FMS equipped with AGVs by simultaneously addressing the material processing and transportation functions.

Dynamic process planning system for a machining center in an FMS environment
Article Abstract:
A dynamic process planning configuration is considered for the machining operations on a pallet in a flexible manufacturing system (FMS) environment. The proposed system is composed of four sub-problems with strategic decision functions and is implemented as a hierarchical system under the minimum elapsed time criterion. The effectiveness of the dynamic process planning system is verified by developing an actual system architecture.
