Site visits illustrate advanced grid design
Article Abstract:
China's power system simulation laboratory offers state-of-the-art equipment and demonstrates a grasp of the latest technologies. Beijing's Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI), which should not be confused with the institute in California with the same name, is part of China's State Power Corporation (SPC). SPC is a power-producing utility comparable in size and sophistication with those in France and Quebec. The organization runs several more R&D labs and conducts tests of power grids and plant equipment, and is responsible for operational decisions. India is employing high-voltage, direct-current (HVDC) transmission technologies to provide a consistent supply of power. The technology is proving ideal for transmitting large blocks of power over great distances.
