Cognitive and interpersonal abilities related to the primary activities of R&D managers

Article Abstract:

The cognitive and interpersonal abilities of R&D managers are evaluated for compatibility with supervisory and managerial activities. The evaluation is based on 117 R&D managers from nine organizations and are graded for 48 tasks categorized into three primary activities, strategic planning, project management and personnel supervision. Strategic planning demands more verbal skills, creativity and objectivity. Project management involves higher information gathering and processing techniques and supervision requires good interpersonal skills.

Technology development control styles in multinational corporations: a case study

Article Abstract:

A case study of management control styles over multinational corporations' foreign research and development (R&D) units is presented. The study is based on the findings of an empirical analysis of 16 multinational corporations operating in technology-intensive industries. A taxonomy of management control styles in foreign R&D is proposed and implications of the case study for future research in the field of technology development control are discussed.
