Super-fridge gives green light to superconductors
Article Abstract:
Cryogenics Managing Director Jeremy Good has contributed to the development of the liquid helium temperature refridgerator. The technique achieves the very low temperature of four degrees Kelvin at greatly reduced cost. Superconducting metals may be used more cheaply as the refridgeration techniques do not boil off helium. Traditional processes use liquefied gas-filled helium cryostats which gradually boil away. Ceramic high-temperature superconductors will also be used more efficiently.

Entering the age of the super composite: new advanced composites are destined to have a dramatic influence on the fluid power industry - especially in the design of components for corrosive environments
Article Abstract:
New composite structures based on glass microspheres, glass strands and epoxy are lightweight but strong, are resistant to wear and are low cost. They will be beneficial to the fluid power industry where they are increasingly being used as a replacement for aluminium. Expoxy Filled Composites (EFCs) can even in some cases replace stainless steel. Composite pneumatic actuators can be used in corrosive situations which would normally require the most expensive metall alloys.

Composite hull gives tank top performance
Article Abstract:
The Advanced Composite Armoured Vehicle Platform is the result of research designed to cut the acoustic noise, weight and radar signature of armoured vehicles. This could save up to approximately 30% in major component weight and show improved performance.
