PLCs protected UK-based, pound250 million particle accelerator machine
Article Abstract:
Omron Electronics has developed a doughnut-shaped super-microscope that uses PLCs to control the critical interlocking systems required to protect the machine. This machine would produce intense light as X-rays, infra-red and ultraviolet, which would help researchers in the development of new medicines, high tech materials and to investigate environmental issues like climate change.

Is the UK losing its design know-how?
Article Abstract:
There has been a significant drop in the percentage of UK based design engineers thereby creating a shortage of experts in the engineering industry. Many analysts, are of the opinion that this only means that companies are using better tools, like CAD, 3D modeling, CAM and Product Data Management (PDM) effectively thus reducing their dependence on engineers.
