Technology '84: Consumer Electronics
Article Abstract:
Leading the advances in consumer elecronics in 1983 were improvements in the quality of television monitors. With TV sets being used with everything from video-disk players to teletext and videotex systems higher-quality reception is necessary. Component systems and digital signal processing made progress in 1983. Compact video disk systems will introduce interactive games in hopes of competing with video-cassette players, which now offer stereo. Sales slowed in the home computer and video game industry. Interactive graphics software for home computer use also became more advanced. A diagram of a compact digital disk player is illustrated.

Company D: A Fortress Undisturbed
Article Abstract:
The engineering work environment at a manufacturer of consumer products is studied. The engineers conduct long-term projects of their own conception but have little idea how their work fits into the final product. They place a high value on public service and family in their personal lives. While there is a dual-advancement ladder, there is also a strict hierarchy, with management clearly superior. In a psychologist's view, the research engineers have virtually no function and have little technical ambition.
