Technology '84: Instrumentation
Article Abstract:
Advances in test and measurement equipment in 1983 involved both the introduction of new equipment and the modification of that already in existence. Trends in bench test equipment include incorporating microprocessors, unifying bench equipment, and combining instruments with personal computers for greater data processing and analysis. Testers that are fast enough to analyze and simulate serial data on local area networks were developed. Computer-aided design and testing were integrated in a workstation from the Mentor Graphics Corp. Computers were used more to correlate VLSI circuit testing. Advances also continued in test equipment such as portable meters and testers. Illustrations show the organization of network testing equipment and computer- instrument communications as well as a testing workstation display and a new color oscilloscope screen.

Next-Generation Impacts
Article Abstract:
Projected impacts of next-generation computing were discussed by a group of engineers and social scientists from industry, government, and academics. They noted that efficient manufacturing through automation will reduce stockpiles of raw materials and shrink factory size. Business and banking decisions will be more automated and computers may handle credit in the future. Expert systems will become prevalent and commonly used for inexpensive advice. Individual initiative may be stifled by an overdependence on expert systems for decision-making. Lower-skilled workers may have less job opportunities because of automation in factories and offices. The privacy of individuals may be threatened by advance computer correlation of information. Education could be damaged if computers are seen as a cure-all for problems in the educational system.

Internationalization: Harmony or Tension
Article Abstract:
Cooperation and competition between nations over satellites and space development is very strong because space has become important economically and militarily. Developed countries need space technology for military and industrial activity, while developing countries use satellite communication to advance development of telephone systems. Much debate is taking place in the United Nations over these issues.
