Technology '84: Power and Energy
Article Abstract:
Emphasis in the United States power industry was on saving money and improving efficiency in 1983. High-voltage dc (HVDC) came on strong for efficient electricity transmission and the linking of ac networks back-to-back. The use of amorphous metals in the cores of new transformers decreased core loss. Several superconducting generators cut energy losses in power plants. Worldwide economic troubles are leading utilities to rebuild older power plants rather than construct new facilities. Software packages, and not hardware, are improving process instrumentation. Many alternative energy technologies in the United States are stagnated due to budget cuts; however, photovoltaics are making serious progress. A table and a map illustrate new HVDC transmission lines.

Article Abstract:
March 28, 1979, the day a major accident occurred at the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in Middletown, Pennsylvania, may have been the beginning of the end of nuclear power in the United States. 1984 may turn out to be a worse year for nuclear power, with a license being denied to a Commonwealth Edison reactor, plants being abandoned in Indiana and Ohio, and other events in Alabama and New York. Improvements are needed for the industry to match the performance of the Swedes, Germans, Finns, Swiss, and French.
