Detroit Unveils Sophisticated Electronics
Article Abstract:
Applications of electronics to automobiles is increasing and refinement of controls is one key to these additions. Multiport computerized fuel-injection systems are adding better performance, fuel economy, and drivability to many 1984 cars. Buick's 3.8-liter V-6 engine model is illustrated and described. Timing adjustments are eliminated in the computer-controlled coil ignition, called C3I by Buick. The 1984 Mark 7 and Continental have an on-board microcomputer-controlled air-suspension system for automatic leveling. Voice information systems are being refined for giving important status messages efficiently, and unannoyingly. Self- diagnosis systems are also being introduced. All technologies are illustrated by tables and-or diagrams.

The Problems and Promises of High-Definition Television
Article Abstract:
High-definition television (HDTV) makes possible sharp pictures with 5:3 or 2:1 aspect ratios and high-fidelity stereophonic sound. Implementation of HDTV is slowed by barriers in bandwidth requirements; the need for international standards, and existing receiver compatibility. CBS Technology Center has announced a compatible direct-broadcast-satellite system that it plans to develop into a commercial system. Many HDTV systems were demonstrated at the Thirteenth International Television Symposium and Exhibition in Montreux, Switzerland in May and June, 1983. Several examples of HDTV performance are illustrated. Diagrams illustrate the CBS system function and signal format.

How Data-Driven Automation Got its Start at IBM
Article Abstract:
Data-driven automation was first used at IBM in the 1960s for manufacturing components of the System 360. One example of a part produced using data-driven automation is a thermal conduction module (TCM). Each module is manufactured on a line using automation, manual fabrication, and testing operations. The integrated manufacturing line handles processing and control information with little paper work.
